Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was one of the premiere American writer/statesmen of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1776 he was elected to the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence and is considered its major draftsman. After serving as Virginia's Governor from 1779 to 1781, he served in Congress in 1783 and then followed Benjamin Franklin as United States Minister to France from 1785 to 1789.
